The Update to Drupal 4.7 Is Already in Progress

That's right. You've already missed half of it! Next time pay better attention. However, if its any comfort to you, I've lost count of the number of sites I've updated in the past week.

*Did you know that google punishes pottymouth sites? Its true: so watch your language; it might hurt your traffic.

10 Drupal Modules You Can't Live Without

This is Outdated: Updated Version: 40 Essential Drupal Modules (1/4/2010)

Via my contact form, someone asked me to list 5 or 10 of the best drupal add ons. I decided to move away from "best", and rather decided to move to "can't live without". Or to put it differently, without these 10 modules, your experience with the minimial base install of drupal is likely to suck. (in spite of my physics teacher I once had who insisted that nothing sucked, but rather blew...).

Regarding the Content Construction Kit Module

Updated 5/8/06

The CCK (content construction kit) module was released only 2 days ago. I've been working with it for only the past 2 hours, and I'm ecstatic. In terms of its overall usefulness, I'd say its in the same category as simplenews, views, and tinyMCE (read: no drupal developer, consultant, or amature should be without it).

In many ways, this module will likely signal death for flexinode. Which doesn't really bother me, because I never used flexinode. While flexinode still has more 'flexibility' in terms of defining all varieties of different fields, it has serious themability issues which have prevented me from ever using it. Moreover, where as flexinode created something of a pseudo-node type, CCK creates full fledged node types that have all the options, workflows, and permissions levels. But perhaps most exciting is how easy it is to theme your custom fields. To get you started, I've written a quick tutorial on exactly that:

The Drupal 4.7 Form API Rears Its Beautiful Head

Last night, I had a rather profound "ah-ha" moments with the new Forms API and php-template. The end result is the first node_form.tpl.php file I've ever written. The screenshot below is of a story form, with all those node options that use to be on the bottom floated to the left in a sidebar fashion.

As drupal is now blessed with this new form API, every single form on the page, be it uploads, menus or taxonomy selections is now available to be thrown around just as is the case in node.tpl.php. Amazingly, it handles AJAX uploads, and node-type and even user variables.

Curved Slate Alpha Release Candidate One Critics' Pre-Screening

Yes, the title is meant to be satirical. However, I won't even call this a "true" alpha release because -- frankly -- I don't think its ready. It's undocumented, a bit buggy, and the design is something I threw together while taking 30 minutes to rest before returning to my real work. However, by popular demand I'm putting up Curved Slate as it stands for download.

Note that this theme only works with drupal 4.7. And no, I have no intention of making it backward compatible.

The Performancing Firefox Plugin for Drupal, and the Approaching Wars of Desktop Publishing

John Wilson out at GHASP brought an awesome firefox plugin to my attention: Performancing.

The tool has a great "blog this!" feature;you select text on any page, and after right clicking and selecting "performancing" it automatically pastes the text you selected within blockquotes, and provides a link. In addition it has built in support and integration with del.icio.us, technorati and a myriad of other services.

Herding Cats: The Motion Picture

In an earlier post, I listed some phrases which I had begun using frequently. One of them was "Like herding cats".Following up, Chris Brown from Liquidvisual.ca sent me a video to let me know that I wasn't alone -- in my tireless efforts to herd cats.

So what if its a commercial?! This is like -- the best commericial --  EVER... ...man.

VIDEO: On Herding Cats

Coincidence?

Stumbled across this cool word dependency tool that takes a word, and uses some algorithm to find closely related words. Guess what word returns highest for "industrial-strength".

Phrases of these Times

I'm not proud of some of the phrases I used frequently at points in my life. There was a point in high scool where I'd begin sentences with "Dude, man -- like -- have you ever noticed.... ?"  However, this morning, sheer egoism,  and delusional thinking has led me to share the phrases I've found myself using more and more...

1. "Like herding cats." -- Have you ever tried to organize, or merely cope with a herd of cats? Try organizing non-profit types with open source.

2. "Lovely party; did you notice that turd in the punch bowl?" -- I first heard this phrase from George Carlin.
